ABOUT
Niranjan Mahawar is a distinguished scholar, author, and collector dedicated to the preservation of Indian tribal and folk culture. After earning his Master’s in Economics from Sagar University in 1960 , he moved to Bastar in 1962 to manage his family's business. This transition defined his life’s work, as he became deeply moved by the region's rich tribal traditions and vibrant artistic heritage. For over four decades, Mr. Mahawar has documented tribal life, focusing on myths, folk drama, and traditional knowledge systems. His extensive research has resulted in five books on tribal arts, eight on folk drama, and four monographs on tribal studies. Notable publications include Bastar Bronzes: Tribal Religion and Art and Pandavani: A Folk Theatre Based on Epic Mahabharat. Beyond his literature, Mr. Mahawar is a dedicated collector of rare artifacts from Bastar, Odisha, and West Bengal. Demonstrating his commitment to cultural preservation, he donated approximately 600 terracotta artifacts to the Anthropological Survey of India's museum in Bastar. He has served as a tribal expert for the Madhya Pradesh Tribal Folk Art Council and spent twenty years as an advisory board member for the magazine Choumasa. Currently, he is finalizing a comprehensive encyclopedia on the folk literature of North Indian languages. His lifelong dedication serves as a vital bridge in preserving the cultural soul of tribal India.
